What to Look For in an Air Conditioning Unit

Have you finally decided to purchase an air conditioning unit for your home? Let us help you with a quick guide on the things you should look for when it comes to buying an air conditioner or looking for a local ac repair.

1. A few quick tips and tricks before you start looking for an air conditioner:
1. Go shopping for your next air conditioner during the colder months. In winter in particular, most appliance centers might run promotions providing big price deductions on off-season appliances such as air conditioners. Additionally, there are less chances for various air conditioner models to be out of stock, as there wouldn’t be a clamor for them during that time.
2. Consult with your electrician before your go for ac repair and service, and ask for his advice on what type of air conditioning system you should install in your home.
3. Read consumer reviews online for your shortlisted air conditioning units. More than any kind of specifications sheet, product reviews from actual users will be a great indication of the performance and quality of a specific air conditioner. Of course, you must always take various consumer reviews with a grain of salt, but it’s still a great way to get an initial read on potential air conditioning units.
4. Compare air conditioning units spec-by-spec online to get a better understanding of which air conditioners fulfill your needs the most.

2. Here are a few factors you should look for in an air conditioning unit:
1. A high energy efficiency ratio (EER) rating.

Air conditioning companies are always finding ways to make their new products more energy efficient than previous ones, so you have a better chance at finding air conditioning units with better EER ratings in newer air conditioner models.

2. A specifications list that matches your home’s cooling requirements.

Before you go shopping and scouting for air conditioning systems, be sure you’ve listed your specific list of cooling requirements for your home. And use this list as your guide when you look through the many air conditioner companies such as air conditioning repair Pakenham or air conditioning repair Toorak , available to you.

3. A long warranty period that provides full coverage.

Already found the perfect air conditioners that fulfills all your needs? Don’t forget to check on the warranty its manufacturer provides as well as its scope. These days the warranty for various air conditioning units usually go for one to at most two years, and this would include the replacement of parts as well as labor.

4. Positive user feedback.

As mentioned at the beginning of this article, it’s important to see if your chosen air conditioner received mostly positive reviews. But the high average rating isn’t the only number you should look into: make sure to check how many reviews the air conditioner has gotten. The more reviews it has received, the more believable the rating.

5. Ideally your air conditioning unit also has the following features:

– A timer and sleep mode

– An indicator light to notify you if the air conditioning unit’s filter needs cleaning or replacing

– An energy saver function

– Oscillating vents that can evenly cool your space.

Cool Your Home With The Highly Energy Efficient, Two-Stage Air Conditioner

It is imperative that you should always take great care of your cooling and heating unit. By taking care of your HVAC device, you’ll not only be enhancing its efficiency but, you’ll also be cutting down your energy costs significantly. What’s more, it would possibly make your cooling machine last for an extended period.

There are a few things that you can do to help maintain your air conditioning. This may involve checking your air filters, cleaning your equipment regularly, keeping the area around the unit clear and perhaps scheduling a routine air conditioning technician inspection.

Air conditioners are available in a wide variety of options, ranging from complex whole-house zoned units, ductless to forced-air and window units. Some homeowners are quite familiar with nearly all types of air conditioners named above. However, there is one particular type that most of you haven’t ever heard of. This is the two-stage cooling and heating system. So today in this particular post, we want to discuss in excruciating details, all you need to know regarding about this new fantastic type of air conditioner.

So what is a two-stage air conditioner?

If you are an individual seeking to replace his or her old or damaged cooling and heating unit, then you should seriously consider investing in a two-stage HVAC unit. Typically, this unique heating and cooling unit have a superb compressor, and this is perhaps what sets it apart from the rest. It is imperative to mention that the conventional air conditioners usually run at a single speed only and that is at high speed. This implies that it may be quite difficult to regulate how much you would want to cool your house. Simply put, standard AC usually cycles on at full blast, regardless of whether you need that much cold air or not. As you would guess, this equates to a substantial amount of wasted electricity.

However, a two-stage air conditioning is highly versatile and runs at two distinct speeds. You can operate it at both high and low speeds. What’s more, this incredibly advanced cooling and heating system typically utilises a variable speed air handler to regulate the amount of air that comes into your home thus offering your ideal comfort as well as unmatched energy efficiency.

It is imperative to note that this particular air conditioner usually operates at a relatively lower speed nearly ninety percent of the time. One good thing is that even at this speed, a two-stage air conditioner still meets the cooling and heating requirements of your home. Besides, it would still be able to keep your house cool while running at fairly lower speed during the hot season.

With the functionality to ramp up its cooling capacity, a two-stage cooling and heating unit adjusts accordingly to your home’s requirements when the temperatures soar. To be more precise, when the temperature rises and humidity increases, a two-stage compressor immediately responds and adjusts its output to a relatively higher speed to help the device keep up with your cooling demand.

So what are some of the benefits of installing a two-stage air conditioner?

There are lots of potential benefits that you’ll enjoy when you invest in a high-quality two-stage cooling and heating system.

Increased durability: A compressor that usually shuts off or on more regularly is subject to greater tear and wear, a phenomenon that eventually reduces its lifecycle. However, with reduced instances of on/off cycling, the two-stage AC units are likely to serve you for longer periods.

Increased efficiency: This is arguably the most important factor that should make you consider this type of cooling and heating device. The air conditioner is extremely energy efficient, and this is primarily because the unit comes equipped with a variable speed air handler that simultaneously regulates the amount of air that moves into your house. This functionality not only provides you with the ultimate experience regarding comfort but equally saves you a significant amount of energy.

Unmatched humidity regulation: When your air conditioner operates continuously, it can potentially dehumidify the air much better. Most of the conventional ACs feature a compressor that may not be able to draw water vapour from the air inside your house appropriately. However, bearing in mind that a two-stage compressor functions continuously, they usually give the coils adequate time to remove the water vapour from your home.

Though a two-stage air conditioner is extremely versatile and comes with other lots of benefits as well, you are still encouraged to ensure that you conduct regular air conditioner service and annual inspection. All experts agree that this is when you can help extend the overall lifecycle of your unit.

Vital Questions To Ask when Getting Quotation for Air Conditioning Installation

It is wise to get quotes from several professionals when you want to install a new air conditioning unit. It helps to identify the expert with reasonable charges. You will end up saving money by avoiding exploitative companies.

Before settling on the final estimate figure for air conditioning installation, there are several questions you should ask the experts including:

What System Capacity or Size Will Suit My Needs Best

The professional should be in a position to accurately evaluate your needs. Using the information, they should let you know the perfect product that your home needs for efficient cooling. Do not just take their word for it as they should explain in simple terms how they decided that a particular size is what you require. Other expert advice that they should give you include things like:

  •        Best brands to consider
  •        If there is any new technology that you should consider
  •        Is the option the professionals are recommending energy efficient
  •        The price of getting the new unit and where to spot the best bargains

 ac repair near me

The Amount Of Time They Need

You will probably be anxious about starting to use your new unit as soon as possible. Ask the heating and air conditioning repair expert installers the time they will take to complete air conditioning installation. It is best to work with professionals who are focused and will not keep you waiting for weeks.

You can also ask about the number of technicians that will be working on the installation process. Do not agree to work with a company that only sends one individual because it may take him/her too much time, which you may not have.

Whether Their Company Operates Legally

No one wants to work with experts who will bring them trouble. It is, therefore, important to confirm that the professionals you want to work with have all the necessary papers that they need to run their business legally.

Confirm that they have insurance; bonds, proper training, and can handle applying for any permits that they need to proceed with the job.

The Payment Terms

Never forget to ask about their payment schedules so that everyone is on the same page. Excellent service providers never ask for the entire amount upfront. They come up with a deposit figure, and you pay the rest when they complete the task satisfactorily.

Confirm if there are any tax credits or rebates available to people who install new systems. It can help to cut costs and give you some financial reprieve.

What Guarantee Does The Company Make?

Never work with professionals who are not sure about the ac repair and service work they do. In most cases, they end up doing a shoddy job that you will regret.

You are better off working with companies that offer a guarantee as it shows that they trust their work. It also gives you a safety net knowing that you will not have to pay extra to correct their mistakes.

Where possible, have the answers that the air conditioning contractors give you in writing. The binding contract will ensure that you have something to fall back on if there are any problems in the future.

Some Facts About Air Conditioning Installation Worth Knowing

As much as an air conditioner is a must in today’s sweltering heat, there are still some people who are hesitant about an air conditioner installation because of some AC related misinformation.

The most obvious misinformation is they fear receiving an expensive energy bill at the end of the month. While your energy bill does increase upon using an air conditioner, you can at least reduce the amount of increase, and enjoy some cool comfort with the following tips.

If you return home after a long day outdoors, and your house is too hot for comfort, the first thing you do is increase the cold air perhaps by setting the thermostat to a low temperature like 68 till your home cools down.

However this is not that useful as it doesn’t help quickly deliver cold air but only creates higher energy bills. What you actually have to do is set the thermostat to a constant, comfortable temperature like 74.

Air conditioners are not trees

Another piece of misinformation about air conditioning installation is that AC units produce cold air! This is far from the truth as if AC units really did produce cold air; we would no longer need trees! On the contrary, AC units take in warm air from the surroundings and cool it using an evaporator coil. The coil absorbs heat to release cool, dehumidified air.

Not many realize that there are various factors which determine, and affect an air conditioning installation. It’s only if your AC unit is installed in the proper position will it cool your home with minimum energy consumption.

Warm air is light

As cool air is heavier than warm air, it’s better to have your AC unit’s air outlet installed as close to the ceiling as possible for optimal cooling. When installed, its louvres should point upwards or horizontally as it’s pointing downwards only heats the room.

Make sure your air conditioning unit’s outdoor unit is installed on firm base like a concrete slab. If not, it should be attached to the wall using sturdy brackets. It’s even better if it is placed somewhere near the indoor AC unit, preferably within 15m distance.

Your AC needs shade too

You can reduce your AC energy consumption just by providing some shade to your air conditioners outdoor unit. This prevents the extra heat of direct sunlight falling onto it, which in turn makes your AC work more to cool the hotter air. So it’s better installing air conditioner on a southern wall, or preferably provide an awning to it.

You need to choose the right sized AC for your home as you don’t want to buy an air conditioner which eventually overworks or under works while cooling your home. Your HVAC expert is the best person to help you decide.

Last, but not least, your home’s ductwork and airflow effects your AC’s energy consumption. There shouldn’t be any leaks in the ductwork as a leak proves expensive with time as energy is wasted through it. It’s also important to have good airflow around your AC unit so that it pulls in and filters the outdoor air to give you healthier and cooler air with minimum energy consumption.

Does Location Affect Your Heater Installation Cost

Fed up of all the heater repairs over the years? Are you thinking of replacing your heater as it’s more than 10 years old now? If this is the case, you naturally wonder how much heater installation costs in 2017, which is explained below.

Homeowners generally have to spend about $850-$2500 for installing water heater, including the labour and heater costs. There are various factors that influence the installation costs like type of heater installed, its size and capacity, power type and complexity of the installation job.

air conditioner repair brisbane

1. Tankless heaters cost more to install

As mentioned above, the type of heater affects the cost for heating repair carlton. The installation is rather easy and straightforward if you are installing a regular, gas type heater, especially to replaces similar older one with a new model. In this case, you may not have to pay more than $300-$450 for the installation.

You however have to pay about $1200 to install a tankless gas heater as this is a more time-consuming process. You may have to pay even more if you opt to switch from a tank to a tankless style of heater as your existing meter, gas piping and gas line to the meter may not accommodate the tankless heater’s high gas load.

You may also have to retrofit the existing gas line, install a new gas line if needed, install the right venting system and in some cases, also need some electrical wiring to be done. Based on your basement and ventilation, you may also have to change your existing gas, water and even electricity lines as the gas tankless heater can’t be vented into the chimney as it needs a direct exterior vent. You thus have to spend at least $1500-$3500 for labour costs.

2. Location is a factor too

Even if you switch to an electric tankless unit, your air conditioner repair brisbane has lots of work like rewiring and expanding your home’s existing system to handle the heater’s extra power consumption. This costs at least $1000 to $1500, but can also reach $3000 if there is more labour involved like opening walls.

Your heater installation costs also depend on where you live as its 15-25% higher in high-income suburban areas like San Francisco and Miami when compared to the lower-income groups.

3. Beware of scams

Be careful of unreasonable pricing scams where some plumbers may charge extra by offering to buy your hot water heater for you and then include their labour charges in the total cost. So you may end up paying much more for even a simple installation.

The best way to avoid this is by getting 3-4 estimates from local professionals, asking them what they will be doing during your heater installation, and then compare costs. It also helps if you do your own online research and ask friends or neighbours who have recently installed heaters.

With all this research, you not only know how much to expect while installing your heater, even your plumbers will think twice before pulling a scam on you as they know you are quite well-versed with the factors influencing a heater installation costs.

Money Saving Tips on Air Conditioning

Having an air conditioner installation in your home will make it a much more comfortable and livable place for its inhabitants, but having the air conditioner running many hours in a day can also cost you a lot of money with an incredibly costly electric bill.

But it’s difficult to limit the use of an air conditioner, especially when you’re experiencing the hottest summer days of the season. Still, we’re always looking for ways to save money while making sure we’re able to provide a home that’s ideal for our family.

You won’t have to stop using your air conditioner completely to save on money from your electric bill. There are a number of methods that can allow you to use your air conditioner without breaking the bank.

 air conditioner repair brisbane

Here a few simple money saving tips on air conditioning to keep in mind as the scorching hot days approach.

  1. Keep your cool inside the home. And we mean that literally – that is, you should inspect the structure of your house to see if there are any cracks or openings where the cool air from your air conditioner can seep through. Some usual suspects include a poorly insulated attic, and faulty doors or windows.
  2. You can usually hire the services of an air conditioning contractor or utility provider to do an energy audit in your home, but since this article is about helping you save money as opposed to helping you spend it, we recommend that you do an energy audit of your home by yourself. And a DIY energy audit need not be complicated – you just need a little time and patience in poring through every corner and space of your home to see if there any cold air escaping through them.
  3. Use a ceiling fan. There are many benefits to having a ceiling fan in your home: it helps circulate air inside the space of your home, and more importantly, it assists your air conditioner in keeping your home cool, but at a much lower cost.
  4. Close the curtains or the blinds during the hottest part of the day. It’s not enough that you seal your home to make sure none of the cool air from your air conditioner comes out. It’s also important to keep out as much of the heat of the sun as you can so that your air conditioner doesn’t have to work as hard to keep your rooms cool. Consequently, keeping the blinds and curtains closed during the hottest part of the day serves as good insulation that traps the cold air inside your home.
  5. Set the thermostat to the highest number that’s bearable and still comfortable for you and your family. Remember that the lower the thermostat goes, the harder your air conditioner works, and the more electricity you use up, leading to a skyrocketing electric bill. You should also be wary of where you put your thermostat – if it’s next to a hot window, it’s more likely that your air conditioner will get triggered to work harder and cost more.

4 Reasons for loud noises from your heating system

heating system

You desperately need a good night’s sleep, but your noisy heating system seems to have other plans for you! You can’t switch it off as it’s cold and you should not ignore these loud noises as it usually means something’s wrong with the HVAC. While professionals can solve the problem you can also perform these easy 4 troubleshooting tips before that.

  1. Boiler making loud noises

Limescale is usually the cause for noisy boilers triggered by the accumulation of hard water in the boiler’s heat exchanger. Adding chemical descalers to the F&E tank so that it pumps through the heating system helps remove excess scale after which you have to flush clean water through the unit a few times. Adding inhibitors to the heating system also helps as it prevents corrosion.

A low water flow rate can also create loud noises as modern gas boilers work optimally with a particular flow rate. So make sure the flow rate is maintained all the time. Improper installation can lead to air in the central heating system which makes your boiler emit strange, loud noises.

  1. Humming sounds

As the pump is usually the culprit for humming sounds from the heating system, you have to check its speed. Too high speeds lead to vibration and noise which can be resolved by adjusting the speed.

If this does not stop the humming, replacing or installing anti-vibration brackets may help. If this too doesn’t help, check the pipe size as too small pipes create a humming sound as it cannot hold the water it carries. The solution here is to install larger pipes, which has to be done by a professional heating repair blackburn technician .

boiler issues

  1. Creaking sounds

Pipes under the floorboards or behind walls may be the cause for creaking sounds you hear when the heating system is in use. Pipes generally expand as hot water passes through them and contracts to normal size once the water cools down.

It’s when the expanded pipes are very near the floor or wall that you hear loud noises when they expand and contract as water passes through them. The solution here lies in finding out where the noise comes from and inspecting the pipes.

If the pipes are sagging, place some felt around the pipes for a better fit and if it’s too tight, try to create some space for expansion by creating a surface notch. Even pipes touching each other may create noises; so placing some felt in between them helps create some space and reduce the noise.

  1. Banging sounds

Waves are created in pipes if water is abruptly stopped, and these waves cause a banging noise which continues till the waves settle. Check if there’s a faulty stop-cock, ball valve or tap in the unit as it prevents the smooth flowing of water through the system. If this too does not solve the problem, check and ensure the water is not flowing too fast.

If your heating system still makes loud noises despite all these troubleshooting tips, it means it’s time you called professional HVAC mechanics to take a look at your unit! They will be able to check and find out if the heating system parts are properly installed, or if there is something else causing the loud noises.

What is an Infrared Heater?

With the onset of winter comes the need to do away with cooling service Melbourne. Instead, you and your family will now need to rely on a heater to keep your home a comfortable place to live in.

There are numerous heating options to choose from: central heating, an electric heater, or perhaps a furnace. Infrared heaters, in particular, are a common choice. Read on to find out more about infrared heaters and why they might be the ideal heater for your home.

What is an Infrared Heater?

Imagine having a tiny sun inside your home – that’s how an infrared heater works. It is able to provide heat by emitting infrared light which, though it cannot be seen by the naked eye, is able to warm bodies and items within its proximity.

An infrared heater is able to produce this light with the use of coils. A reflector then directs this light outside of the heater to its surroundings.

What are the Pros of Using an Infrared Heater?

  1. An infrared heater works immediately, with minimum setup required.

You only need to turn the infrared heater on for it to start working and providing heat to its surroundings instantly. Once on, stay near the infrared heater and find yourself getting warm in no time!

  1. Infrared heaters are an environment-friendly, clean source of heat.

Because they do not require the use or burning of fossil fuels to function, nor do they burn up wood in order to provide heat, they do not release harmful waste into the air with every use. They’re definitely a clean, green, heating machine!

Additionally, they’re an efficient heating option, because they do not heat entire rooms, only objects and bodies within their vicinity.

  1. An infrared heater is able to warm you up with no distracting noise.

Because it does not use a fan, an infrared heater is basically completely silent, providing heat without distraction, so you can sleep peacefully in a warm, noise-free environment at night.

What are the Cons of Using an Infrared Heater?

  1. The light an infrared heater emits can be distracting for some people.

It may be a quiet machine, and without noise it therefore doesn’t keep you from getting a good night’s sleep, but if you are the type of person who needs pitch-black darkness to get some good shut-eye, the infrared heater might not be a good option for your bedroom.

Because it emits light in order to provide heat, this orange glow can be distracting and too bright for some people.

  1. An infrared heater cannot heat an entire room or large spaces.

Infrared heaters are used to warm its immediate surroundings. They’re ideal for a spot near your couch or in the bedroom. But if you’re looking to warm a much bigger space with more people, an infrared heater might not be up for the job due its limited heating capacity.

  1. An infrared heater does not provide lasting warmth.

Because an infrared heater does not warm the air inside a space, its heating effects are not lasting. That is, once an infrared heater is turned off, the warmth it provides almost immediately disappears.

How to Care for Your Window Type Air Conditioner

The window type air conditioner you just recently bought has survived its first summer, and it’s worked wonders in making your home a comfortable place to live in despite the scorching heat of the season.

Now you need to make sure your air conditioner will work the same way for many more summers to come, and that means regular maintenance for your system.

Here are a few simple steps you can take to care for your window type air conditioner, so you can make sure it will be in tip-top shape for the next summer season.

An important pre- and post-season reminder

Air conditioner maintenance doesn’t just happen during the summer or any of the months when you use your unit. In fact, you should go through these steps before you start using your air conditioner for the summer, and after the season is over.  This way, you can help prevent any issues or problems that might come along once the air conditioner is used. In this case, regular preventive maintenance can also save you a lot of money that you would’ve spent if the unit breaks down on you.

Storage Tip

If you plan to put your air conditioner in storage when it’s not being used, be sure to inspect all of its components before you do so. Check around the unit to see if there are no gaps where cool air might come out and make your air conditioner less efficient. You should also do this check after you’ve taken the unit out of storage for use.

On the other hand, if you do not plan to keep your air conditioner in storage, make sure you have a sheet of all-weather material to place or cover over it during the winter months.

How to Clean the Evaporator and Condenser Coils

The simpler way to go about cleaning your air conditioner’s condenser coils is to vacuum them with a brush attachment. But if you want to be more thorough, especially during pre- and post-summer maintenance, you should take the following steps:

  1. Remove the mounted air conditioner unit from the casing. This way you have better access to the coils.
  2. Using your cleaner of choice, rinse the coils with water and apply the cleaner generously.
  3. Rinse the cleaner or detergent off the condenser coils thoroughly and allow them to dry before placing the air conditioner back to its casing.

How to Clean Your Window Type Air Conditioner’s Filter

The most critical step in making sure your window type air conditioner works efficiently and effectively is also thankfully the simplest. You must regularly clean and replace the filter on your air conditioner to make sure dirt and dust do not clog the unit, making it more difficult for it to produce cool air.

Check your air conditioner user manual to understand what your model’s filter looks like and if it can be cleaned and reused, or if you need to constantly replace it. You should do this step at least once a month while the air conditioner is in use, or more often if you notice the air quality your unit has been producing to have worsened.
